Places To Visit
Périgueux is the ‘capital city’ of the Dordogne, about 45 minutes by car. Founded over 2000 years ago, it is a blend of ancient and modern. Cobbled alleys are lined with magnificent Renaissance houses and boutiques, whilst shady squares and cafés host free evening jazz concerts and a mime festival in July and August.

The charming town of Brantôme is an island encircled by a loop of the river Dronne, linked by five bridges, hence its nickname ‘Venice of the Périgord’.
Only 15 minutes away, Brantôme offers first-class restaurants, crêperies, parks and historic monuments. Leisure activities include boat tours and canoeing.

Nontron lies about 12Km northwest of ‘Le Tilleul’ and is famous worldwide for its cutlers, holding an annual “Fête du couteau” during August. Nontron is also noted for its Dolls Museum.

The medieval village of St Jean de Cole is only 10 minutes away. Classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, it has won prizes for its “finest roofs in France” Its main square is surrounded by half-timbered houses, a covered marketplace, a 12th-century church and the Château de la Marthonie.

The charming little Château de Puyguilhem is just a 5 minute drive away in Villars. Built in the early 16th Century in the ‘Val de Loire’ style it nestles in the surrounding countryside and is well worth a couple of hours visit. The interior is decorated with tapestries and
furniture and guided tours last about 45 minutes with translation sheets available.

Also in Villars are the famous.’grottes’. The largest underground network of caves in the Périgord, they contain prehistoric paintings made 17000 years ago and the underground river and rainwater has created breathtaking scenery of unusual calcite formations. There is a ‘son et lumière’ show, teaching area with animated images, together with picnic area, shop and playground.

Quite regularly throughout the year, our nearby village organises special evening meals. These range from a ‘Moules & Frites’ or an ‘Entrecote & Frites’ evening. All are welcome, visitors and residents alike. During the summer evenings, you will also see that organised walks are on offer (not for the faint-hearted!) .
