‘Le Tilleul’ is an 18th Century farmhouse situated in the small and quiet hamlet of Magnac within the Périgord-Limousin Régional Naturel Parc in the Périgord Vert area of the Dordogne.
The house is believed to date back to the Middle- Ages, originally being the site of a castle or fort, which at some time was destroyed by fire. Materials from the original structure were then used to construct some of the present buildings and also those in the nearby village of Milhac de Nontron.
Around the grounds, evidence can be found of an original wall and tower and many of the timbers show signs of having been used elsewhere. Within the wall around the courtyard, one stone is dated 1717, which we believe to be the rebuilding date. Over the recent years, ‘LeTilleul’ has been extensively restored and now offers exceptional self-catering gite accommodation in two separate houses, Le Cottage and La Petite Grange, within its secluded 6 acre grounds and woodland, plus a 12 x 6 metre swimming pool.
The surrounding area of unspoilt countryside and forests is perfect for walkers, cyclists and birdwatchers alike.Other activities in the immediate vicinity include canoeing, fishing, tennis and horse-riding. For the more adventurous, microlight hire is also available in nearby Brantôme.
The Périgord, former province now known as the Dordogne, is a beautiful department of South-West France, a land of castles and bastides towns and villages dating back to the middle ages, where truffles, duck and foie gras are part of a special way of life, a must to visit. It has preserved its history as well as moving with the times, restoring and developing old quarters of Périgueux, capital city, and Bergerac into pedestrian areas. The Périgord Vert is a paradise for those who love the countryside, teeming with wildlife such as wild boar, deer and trout, and is ideal for those seeking a tranquil way of life in a truly French rural setting.
